Moonhack breaks a world record for kids coding, again

On Tuesday, 28,575 kids around Australia broke a world record by coding on the same day.  It was all for Moonhack, an event for ages 8 to 18 set up by Code Clubs Australia, a network of 1,950 volunteer-led, after-school coding clubs for children.  This year was the first time the event officially expanded internationally from its native Australia, due in part to a strange occurrence which happened after the first Moonhack last year. The new ‘Uncharted’s photo mode hilariously lets you ruin all the game’s best moments

Naughty Dog’s games are too beautiful for your run-of-the-mill screenshots. Namely, they’re losing their minds over the ridiculous facial…

‘Pivot to video’ is not the death of words

‘Pivot to video’ is not the death of words

The “pivot to video” is not the death of words.  It’s not the death of journalism or a sign that people are abandoning everything that is right and good in the world. What it is, however, isn’t much better. SEE ALSO: Facebook is turning up the heat on media companies yet again The “pivot to video” is the product of an internet that is run by Google, Facebook, and an advertising market with little regard for anything that isn’t video. They’re setting the rules, and media companies—especially startups—have to play…

Facebook is finally purging annoying fake videos from your News Feed

Facebook is finally purging annoying fake videos from your News Feed

Say goodbye to annoying fake Facebook videos. The social network is tweaking its algorithm so you’ll see static memes disguised as videos and images with fake play buttons way less often.  Spammers have been flooding the site with these trick formats to take advantage of Facebook’s fanatical focus on promoting video above other types of content. Uploading single images as videos can earn the poster advertising money, and photos made to look like videos can lead users to sketchy sites with malicious ads. An example of a photo with a…

Trump’s response to Barcelona attack? A fake story about bullets dipped in pigs’ blood.

Trump’s response to Barcelona attack? A fake story about bullets dipped in pigs’ blood.

The president of the United States just advocated for the execution of Muslim prisoners by firing at them with bullets dipped in pigs’ blood.  He did so by doing something he’s done before — reiterating a totally disproved internet tale about a massacre. In the story — which again, is false — U.S. Gen. John J. Pershing uses the blood of pigs, considered impure in Islam, to cover the bullets he used to kill 50 Muslim prisoners in the Philippines in the early 1900s.  SEE ALSO: A giant inflatable ‘Trump…

Canada’s forests are on fire, and the smoke is headed for the Arctic’s vulnerable ice

Canada’s forests are on fire, and the smoke is headed for the Arctic’s vulnerable ice

Forests in Canada are ablaze, with 2.2 million acres going up in flames so far this year in British Columbia alone. These fires, and others in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, have been belching smoke into the air, in some cases up to 8 miles high.  Once in the atmosphere, weather patterns are causing the wildfire smoke to converge into a blanket so thick it’s blotting out the sun across northern Canada. This smoke is working its way to the high Arctic, where it could speed up the melting of…
